Health Insurance, Health Care, and Behavior among Children of Immigrants

Julia Gelatt
Don Winstead
Dec 11, 2014

Dr. Julia Gelatt was featured in a Webinar with Mr. Don Winstead as a discussant. During the Webinar, Dr. Gelatt explored some ways that parents’ and children’s immigration status (U.S.-born, legal immigrant, or undocumented immigrant) affects children’s lives. She presented data on the number of children in the U.S. living with undocumented family members, as well as prior research on how parents’ immigration status affects children’s development, academic success, and access to services and benefits. Based on her analysis of survey data from Los Angeles County and a nationally-representative dataset, this Scholar presented her findings on the health insurance rates, access to usual care providers, and problem behaviors of both undocumented immigrant children and U.S.-born children with undocumented immigrant parents.
